<image:title>Adventure Blog - Mount Baldy</image:title>
<image:caption>Mount Baldy, or Mount San Antonio, is one gigantic loop that offers several different climbing options. The entire loop is 12 miles or you can do half the loop and come in and out the same way. Mt. Baldy has so many unique features from a waterfall and a boulder forest to the iconic Baldy Bowl on the south side of the mountain that looks like a natural amphitheater formed from glacial erosion. Half way up the mountain is the San Antonio Ski Hut. The Ski Hut is a tiny, green cabin built in 1936 run by the Sierra Club that is used for overnight stays for up to 16 people. The hut is a fully equipped mountaineer’s cabin with a full kitchen, first aid station and bunk beds in the attic. Sierra Club members can reserve space in advance but anyone is allowed to stay there. Past the Ski Hut is when the most challenging part of the hike begins because the terrain becomes much more steep. To give you an idea you climb over 2000 feet in elevation in just a one and a half miles. That’s a lot! During that time there’s the illusion of multiple false summits where you think you’re reaching the peak only to realize there’s another one hidden behind it. The summit of Mt. Baldy itself is completely barren of trees and filled with flat, slate rocks that people have built into wind breaker walls. It has 360 degree views of the San Bernardino mountain range. Once you’ve summited the mountain you can either go down the way you came or, cross what is called the Devil’s Backbone and finish the loop coming out through the Mt. Baldy ski resort. The Devil’s backbone is an extremely narrow ridge line trail that can be deadly in the wrong conditions. However, in the spring and summer months the backbone offers the most stunning views of the Baldy Bowl on one side and the valley on the other. If you can safely traverse it, it is absolutely worth the effort. The only drawback to this side of the loop is the last two miles which are a flat, gravel, fire road that is boring to look at and brutal on the knees. With the exception of the fire road, the entire Baldy experience will be something that you can remember for the rest of your life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adventure Blog - Mount San Jacinto</image:title>
<image:caption>Mount San Jacinto is a beautiful mountain. The trails on this masterpiece of nature were super steep but, the hike itself isn’t too long. The mountain was about 5 to 6 miles from the parking lot to the summit. However, I highly suggest taking two days to climb Mount San Jacinto because it is much more fun to take your time than rushing up and down. There’s so much to take in that a speed climb doesn’t do it justice. It’s also a really fun mountain to sleep on. Keep in mind, Mount San Jacinto’s only water source comes from snow melt. So, if you’re climbing spring/summer you’ll need extra water. If you’re climbing fall/winter you can use your water filter to get drinking water from the snow run off, or the snow itself. One of the coolest parts about San Jacinto is its summit. The very top is basically a pile of irregularly shaped boulders that you have to scramble up to reach the peak. Once there you are able to see a full 360 degree view from the LA basin to Palm Springs and beyond. This mountain was truly amazing. It’s luscious and untouched by modern tech and society. This mountain is best for hikers who have built up their endurance. It’s a lot of elevation gain in a short period of time but, if you’re able to complete it the effort is entirely worth your while.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adventure Blog - Mount Whitney</image:title>
<image:caption>Mount Whitney not a starter mountain. It is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states and should only be done after you have properly trained for a mountain of its stature. It’s important to remember that climbing at altitude requires acclamation. It doesn’t matter what great shape you’re in, altitude can affect everyone in serious way. If you are able to summit this gorgeous mountain made of rock spires and trees, not only will it give you a feeling of accomplishment that will fuel your drive for the rest of the hike but, it proves you can start attempting some of the biggest mountains around the world. Mount Whitney’s trail takes you through dense, old growth forest, past beautiful alpine lakes, through a vast canyon surrounded by rocky fingers higher than any building on the planet. It’s like something out of a storybook. Of all the mountains I have climbed in my life, this is my favorite hike and I will do it again and again, each time learning something new about myself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gear - 3. Technical Clothing</image:title>
<image:caption>Along with shirts and pants, jackets are very important. You need to stay warm on mountains, so I suggest bringing a light weight, durable, puffer jacket or fleece. Both of these keep your core temperature high so you don’t get cold. Regular hoodies are too heavy and don’t keep you warm enough or break the wind. Remember as you get higher, the wind can get stronger. Regular street clothing just doesn’t work on mountains. Pro Tip… If you have the opportunity, purchase a windbreaker (outer shell). Windbreakers are jackets specifically designed to protect you from the wind which can be freezing depending on where you are.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gear - 5. Trekking Poles</image:title>
<image:caption>Trekking Poles are one of the most useful hiking tools ever. They help disperse the weight of your pack and body over larger area and secure you on the mountain. Hiking poles also really make all the difference if you’re tired and think you're done because you have something to lean on. I highly recommend getting a pair. Pro Tip … If you are going to get Trekking poles purchase the ones with hinge extenders and not twist extenders because twist extenders have a tendency to retract into themselves when you least expect it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gear - 6. Other Articles</image:title>
<image:caption>Hats, specifically ball caps, are amazing on mountains. They keep your hair out of your face, and block the sun. Toques and beanies keep your head warm which is super important when it gets cold since we lose so much heat through our head. If you have the opportunity, I would also recommend a semgal. A semgal is a type of lightweight scarf/wrap that can be used around your neck, around your head, across your face or even as a small shelter for shade. Semgals are commonly found in Arab countries and are incredibly useful. Pro Tip… If you’re hot you can wet your semgal with water and wrap it around your neck which cools you off immediately and is super refreshing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gear - 1. Boots</image:title>
<image:caption>Having the right boots on a mountain is crucial. If your foot is a little too big or small in a boot, it can change every plan you had for that hike. Personally, I recommend Salomon boots but, everyone's foot is different so go to your local REI and get sized there! Pro Tip… Don’t rush the fitting process. If you do, you can get terrible blisters, have your toes crushed, and all in all have a horrible time. You don’t want any of that. Right?</image:caption>

<image:title>Gear - 4. Backpacks</image:title>
<image:caption>When most people first get into hiking they don’t have a proper hiking backpack and regular travel backpacks can get torn up on the trail. If you are interested in hiking, a small day backpack will be perfect. If you’re not interested in buying a whole new pack just yet, that’s totally ok! You can use any backpack you would like for low-intensity hikes but, as soon as you plan to hike any big mountains, you will need a bigger bag that can carry more weight and distribute that weight properly across your body. Pro Tip… I recommend Osprey packs. They are comfortable and come in many different sizes and designs.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ff2623466132f51dedd9c98/t/6095e3c24c75240b4297794f/1620603451956/download-3.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Gear - 2. Clothing Basics</image:title>
<image:caption>Some of you might want to look stylish on the mountain, but having lightweight, moisture wicking clothing is key. Meaning: NO COTTON. Remember this when you purchase your hiking clothes. If you are hiking when it is warm it can get super hot over the course of the day. Plus, when you’re hiking you heat up quickly because of the physical activity. You also sweat a lot and that either sits on your skin or makes your clothes wet which can be uncomfortable or makes you cold if the weather turns. You want to look for ventilated pants, shorts or leggings. If it’s cold you want an insulation layer of long johns which you will cover with pants. Jeans and sweatpants are actually terrible for hiking because they have no airflow and they limit your movement. Again, REI has some amazing clothing options. Pro Tip… I highly suggest pants with zippers at the knees. These pants make it a possibility to turn them into shorts, or just unzip them a little for ventilation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From small hikes to big hikes, from paper maps to electronic maps, no matter where you go you must know where you’re going. With today’s technology, the maps on your phone are practical and offer many options for different hikers. The app I use is called All Trails. It has thousands of different maps and trail routes for you to determine the best route to your destination. This app also allows you to layer multiple maps so you can choose what type of map works for you at that moment. From satellite to topographical maps it allows you to see where you are while keeping you on track. Even with all the technology at our fingertips it is still smart to have a backup paper map in case of emergency.</image:caption>

<image:title>Know Your Trail - Weather & Conditions</image:title>
<image:caption>Weather is a tricky thing. Some hikes are boiling hot and only require a t-shirt and sunscreen, while others can be the complete opposite with sub-zero temperatures and specialized equipment needed. To ensure you are properly prepared with the right gear and expectations you must check the weather before you go on any hike. If you check the weather forecast ahead of time you can choose the best window to make sure the conditions are on your side for your hike. If you don’t, you could get caught in a heat wave, a blizzard or rain storm and you don’t want that. An amazing website you can use to check the weather is Mountain-Forecast.com Be safe. Be Prepared. Have Fun.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food & Water - Water Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>Water is the liquid of life on or off the trail. Meaning without it, you're a goner. So, use common sense and…stay hydrated. This may seem like a no-brainer but, seriously, I’ve seen too many people, who didn’t bring enough water, struggle on the trail. Here are some ideas on how much water you should bring, ways to carry it and, if need be, where to find and filter it. Before you head out make sure to check your conditions and how long you plan to hike. If it’s a 90 degree, 10 mile, summer hike with minimal water sources you’re going to need far more water than if you’re walking in 70 degree spring weather along a river. Remember: too much is better than not enough. If it’s winter and you're doing a 2 day hike/camp in the mountains, bring at least 1 liter of water and the correct tools to filter more if you run out. (More on filters below.)</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ff2623466132f51dedd9c98/t/6099e22880228858e67fc88f/1620697747721/</image:loc>
<image:title>Food & Water - Water Containers</image:title>
<image:caption>Your options on how to carry water varies depending on what suits you best. My personal preference is a reusable water reservoir that is typically carried inside your backpack with a tube to drink from. These come in 0.5-3 Liter sizes and are most convenient for carrying larger amounts of water. Your second option is the good old-fashioned water bottle. Perfect for those going on short hikes, climbers looking to minimize their pack weight, and speed demons needing a quick refill option. Pro Tip… I suggest Camelbak water pouches as opposed to Osprey pouches. I have found over time the Camelbak nozzle is much easier to drink from.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food & Water - Water Sources & Filters</image:title>
<image:caption>You will have adventures where even the biggest of reservoir or bottle of water won’t be enough to get you through. In these cases, you’ll have to locate a water source so you can filter and resupply. The most common freshwater sources in the backcountry are streams, rivers, and lakes. On bigger mountains, or in colder temperatures, snow and snow-melt are your best friends for finding water. There are many types of water filters for different situations. From ultra-light squeeze bottle filters, campsite hand pumps, gravity filter systems best suited for larger groups, and easy-to-use emergency Lifestraws. In my family, we’re big fans of the Platypus Gravity Filter if you’re hiking with a bigger group, and the Grayl Geopress, all-in-one water bottle filter for everything else. Remember, no matter how fresh it looks, water always needs to be filtered to make sure it won’t make you sick. Stay safe and drink up!</image:caption>

<image:title>Food & Water - Food</image:title>
<image:caption>There are many different types of hiking food. From day hike snacks to overnight mountaineering meals. There are a few rules you should know before you go packing whatever food your heart desires. Carry the least amount of weight possible. This means no metal cans or heavy glass containers. Re-pack your food for travel. Try and put your food in reusable plastic bags. One, so you don't waste plastic, and two, so your bag is just that much lighter. Don't overdo it on the sugar. Calories matter and you need to fuel your body properly. One candy bar is fine, but if you pack five, rethink your choice. Too much sugar can make you crash, and once you crash it is hard to keep going. Easy access snacking. To keep your body fueled, always have snacks that you can eat on the go, like energy bars, fruit sticks, and almond butter pouches. Use the environment to your advantage. Food, like eggs and cheeses, has a good chance of going bad while you hike because it is not refrigerated. Nevertheless, in some cases, there can be exceptions. For example, if you are hiking in colder climates you can bring perishable food because you’re basically walking in an outdoor refrigerator. Mountaineering Meals. When you're climbing a mountain you will want light, high-protein food that will fill you up. There are many different brands of hiking meals, but throughout my experience eating and trying them all, my favorite brand is Mountain House. Mountain House has a wide variety of options. One of the best being their Beef Stroganoff. Pack out what you pack in. This means: DO NOT LITTER. Park rangers and recreation teams work very hard to keep the mountains and trails clean. They do this because one, it’s bad for the environment, and two, because if there is trash all over the trail it ruins the experience for others. So be mindful of your surroundings.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ff2623466132f51dedd9c98/t/609b30dc4bfddf3b3675a918/1620783354779/IMG_0758.JPEG</image:loc>
<image:title>Food & Water - Utensils and Stoves</image:title>
<image:caption>Mountain House food requires hot water to be edible, so when you’re hiking and you need to heat up water you will need a portable light weight stove. My Dad and I have one called a Jet Boil. A Jet Boil heats up water in minutes using a miniature jet flame. Other utensils I would suggest is a spork (a half spoon half fork that is very practical for hiking), a titanium cup and a titanium pot that is super light weight and necessary for eating and drinking on the side of a mountain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Safety - Safety</image:title>
<image:caption>Keeping you and your team safe when hiking is always the most important thing. Hiking is a fun sport but can also be a dangerous one with many unexpected changes and surprises that can be both good and bad. First Aid. The first thing to remember is to always bring a proper first-aid kit. From cuts and gashes, to bruises and blisters, your first-aid kit will keep you, and your team, assured of safety. If you have the time, and the means, you should look into taking a wilderness safety course that will teach you how to properly use a first-aid kit. Doing this will add another layer of assurance on the trail. Communication. Climbing can be an expensive sport, depending on how high, and how far, you want to go. The more adventurous you get the more risk you’ll take on. If you can, look into either renting, or purchasing, a satellite messaging device. In an emergency, you’ll be able to connect to help anytime, anywhere. Summit Fever. Finally, it’s important to remember is that you don’t have to summit every time. If you, or a member of your team, is showing signs of struggle, like altitude sickness, dehydration or exhaustion, turn around! Know your limits. The mountain will always be there. Pro Tip… Sunburns and chapped lips happen easier at high altitudes. Always, remember to pack sunscreen and chapstick. You’ll thank me later.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mount Baldy - Mount Baldy or Mount San Antonio has two trails one being longer than the other. The two trails both take you to the summit, but give you two wildly different experiences. The first trail (The ski hut trail) is steeper than the other measuring about 9 miles round trip. This trail has a small Ice Hut about halfway up the mountain. There you can eat outside on benches, and if it's open go inside. The Ice Hutt has many entities that can be used like bunk beds , but only members of the Sierra Club can open the Hutt and close the Ice Hut up. The second trial is called the Devil's backbone. Is about a 12 miles round trip, and has another lodge up the trail too. Mt Baldy is also a ski resort, meaning in the winter seasons if they get enough snow, you can ski on its designated trails. The Ski Lodge has a cafeteria, e.c.t This place however does not have overnight lodging. Look, don't get me wrong. Devils backbone is a good trail, but after you pass the ski lodge you have to walk down a fire trail. Now the fire trail is grueling, it takes a lot out of your feet and knees. In my opinion, you should skip that part of the hike and just take the Ski Hut trail down. Nevertheless, if you want the full experience, try it! Mount Baldy is a part of the California 6 pack and if you want to do those mountains this should be the third one you climb.</image:title>
<image:caption>Pro Tip Mount Baldy can be very dangerous especially when you’re on the devils back bone trail. If it gets too windy you can blow right off. So be careful.</image:caption>
